VNL Finals introduce Green Cards for fair play

The Volleyball Nations League (VNL) will introduce a new system of rewarding fair play for the men’s and women’s tournaments during the VNL finals this July, which will be held in Arlington, United States and Gdansk, Poland, respectively. For the first time in international competitions, green cards will be used to reward players who admit to a block touch or a net touch, helping save time from unnecessary video challenges. The team which receives the most green cards at the VNL finals will be awarded a prize of USD 30,000 called the “Fair Play Moment”. This new system aims to encourage spontaneous fair play behavior by the players.

The FIVB President had already awarded a Fair Play award of USD 15,000 to the men’s team of Poland during the VNL 2022 Finals in Bologna, Italy. This system has already been applied in domestic club competitions, example in Italy and Bulgaria. The aim of this new system is to implement it across all volleyball competitions in the future. The women’s VNL finals will be held from July 12th to 16th in Arlington, the USA while the men’s VNL finals will be held in Gdansk, Poland from July 19th to 23rd, where eight teams for each tournament will participate in a direct elimination bracket of quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches.
