Serbian libero Djurdevic risked penalty due to her racist gesture

Not for the first time, Serbia’s volleyball federation has been forced to apologise after footage showing libero Sanja Djurdevic who drew two fingers to the side of her face to make the “slanty-eyes” racist gesture days ago in a match against Thailand on 3 June in VNL 2021.

Serbia team is on the verge of possible sanctions forbidding the national team from partaking in international tournaments for a certain period including the Tokyo Olympics. FIVB has just posted a statement about the follow-up investigation while team USA stand up for #stopasianshate advocate with a post on social media.

Few days later, the FIVB disciplinary panel sub committee adjudicated Serbian player Sanja Djurdjevic violated the disciplinary regulation and will receive a two match suspension. In addition, the volleyball federation of Serbia will be fined CHF$20000.

InstaVolley hopes that there will be no more racist behaviour in the world of volleyball and believes FIVB can manage to do it justice with appropriate actions.
