FIVB World Grand Champions Cup Kicks off on 5 September in Japan

The seventh edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Grand Champions Cup Open will be held from September 5 to 10, 2017 in the cities of Tokyo and Nagoya in Japan and the Men’s competition will be held from  September 12 to 17 in the cities of Nagoya and Osaka in Japan.

History of the tournament

The FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup was created in 1993, after radical changes made on the biggest tournaments organised by the FIVB. The main goal was not to have a single year without a world FIVB competition. This is the only FIVB tournament that doesn’t give FIVB points for the world ranking.

Brazil has been the most successful team with the men’s team winning four and the women’s team two titles.

Formula

The FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup features a total of six teams per gender with the host nation, Japan, and four continental winners from Asia, Europe, NORCECA and South America, and one wild card entry granted by the FIVB.

The Round Robin system is used for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Grand Champions Cup.

This year, six women’s teams included: Host Team- Japan, Asian Best Ranked Team- China, European Best Ranked Team- Russia, NORCECA Best Ranked Team- USA,South American Best Ranked Team- Brazil and Wild card was given to Korea.

For the men’s team, included: Host Team Japan, Asian Best Ranked Team- Iran, European Best Ranked Team- France, NORCECA Best Ranked Team- USA, South American Best Ranked Team- Brazil and the Wild card goes to Italy.
